Existing home sales in the US fell by 2.5% from the previous month to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 3.86 million in August of 2024, edging down from the upwardly revised 3.96 million sales, to mark the fourth decline of the year. The decline took place despite the drop in mortgage rates in the period, which contributed to a drop in the median existing-home sales price -$10,200 thousand to $416,900. Inventory of unsold housing rose and edged higher to the equivalent of 3.9 months of sales at the latest rate, picking up from 3.6 months from the earlier month. Among different geographical regions, existing-home sales fell in the South, West, and Northeast. On the other hand, sales in the Midwest were loosely unchanged.
