Construction output in the UK contracted by 0.4% year-on-year in September 2024, compared with market estimates of a 0.5% decline and after an upwardly revised 0.5% growth in the previous month. It was the sixth time of decrease so far this year, dragged by a further drop in new work (-2.7% vs -2.9% in August). At the same time, there was a sharp slowdown in repair and maintenance activity (2.8% vs 5.4%). Monthly, construction output edged up 0.1%, much slower than a 0.6% increase in August as new work declined (-0.2% vs 1.7%) while repair and maintenance activity grew for the first time in four months (0.4% vs -0.8%). Sector-wise, four out of nine logged expansion, with private housing repair and maintenance being the main contributor to the rise.
