The HCOB France Composite PMI was revised upwards to 48.6 in September 2024, compared to the flash estimate of 47.4 but below August's reading of 53.1. The latest figure confirmed a renewed downturn in private sector business activity, the steepest since March, as the key services sector fell back into contraction after August's Olympics-driven growth (PMI at 49.6 vs 55 in August). Moreover, manufacturing continued to fall at a solid pace for the 20th straight month, though slightly less than in August (PMI at 44.6 vs 43.9). Total new business inflows shrank for a fourth successive month while the pace of job creation was marginal. Backlogs of work, meanwhile, fell at the fastest pace since January amid falling capacity constraints across both monitored sectors. Input cost inflation slowed significantly, with operating expenses rising at the slowest pace in nearly four years, while output prices remained unchanged. Lastly, business confidence reached its highest level since July 2022.
