The Reserve Bank of Malawi kept its benchmark lending rate steady at 26% in its decision on January 30, 2025. The Committee also maintained the lombard rate at 20 basis points above the policy rate and retained the liquidity reserve requirement ratio at 10% for local currency deposits and 3.75% for foreign currency deposits. The Committee noted that inflation eased in Q4 2024 and is expected to decline further in 2025, allowing room for possible rate cuts. However, food inflation rose in December due to maize shortages. Inflation is projected to slow to 22% by year-end, supported by base effects and monetary policy. The MPC stressed the need for measures to boost productivity and forex reserves. Meanwhile, GDP growth is forecast to rebound to 4.0% in 2025 from 1.8% in 2024, driven by agriculture, mining, and tourism.
